Rules of Syntax and Exercise-03

14. Either — or, neither — nor দ্বারা যুক্ত singular Subject-এর পরে singular verb ও pronoun বসে:
Either he or his brother is guilty.
Neither he nor his brother is guilty.


15.যখন alternative Subjects ভিন্ন number হয়, তখন verb নিকটবর্তী Subject অনুযায়ী বসবেঃ
Were you or he there?
Was he or you there?
Either he or you were there.
Either you or he was there.
কিন্তু কখনো কখনো উহাকে এড়িয়ে দ্বিতীয় verb বসানো হয়ঃ
Was I or you on duty? = Was I or were you on duty?

16. যখন একটা singular এবং একটা plural alternative Subject ‘or’ বা ‘nor’ দ্বারা যুক্ত হয়, তখন verb নিকটবর্তীটাকে অনুসরন করে।
Neither the child nor its companions have been heard of since.
Either the children or their nursemaid has taken the hook.
Neither the teacher nor the students are coming.
Neither the students nor the teacher is coming.

17. Either— or, neither—nor দ্বারা যুক্ত subjects যদি বিভিন্ন person-এর হয়, তবে verb-টি নিকটতম subject অনুযায়ী হয়:
Either he or I am to blame.
Neither he nor you ate guilty.
Either he or they are guilty.

EXERCISE-03

Fill up the blanks:—
1. Either you or he—wrong.
2. Kiran, Ripon or Ramesh—done this.
3. Jadu or you—done this.
4. Neither the king nor his ministers — present.
5. Neither the captain nor the sailors—saved.
6. Either he or you —— to blame.
7.Neither life nor property — respected.
8. Neither the moon nor the stars — visible.
9. Either I or they — in fault.
10. Man’s happiness or misery — unreal.
11. Either your box or your books — burnt.
12. Either the boy or his friends—acted improperly.
